Even today French locals, other Europeans and Americans find themselves drawn to the Meuse-Argonne region of France.  Once drawn there, many return time and again; often working on multi-year research or preservation projects.  In this irregular interview series, the Webmaster hopes to introduce readers to some of these individuals and their labor of love.

Dominique Lacorde speaks no English, yet he has become one of the most active participants in the Meuse-Argonne.com Facebook Group.  He is always willing to help people, and he won’t let his lack of English get in the way.  The Webmaster met him last year at his Exposition in Gesnes, and Dominique immediately welcomed him and introduced him to several people.

 

1)  What are your name, nationality and occupation?

2)  Which languages do you speak, and how fluently do you speak them?

Français et un peu d’allemand pas couramment.

French and a little German, but not fluently.

 

3)  When was your first visit to the Meuse-Argonne?

J’y suis né et j’y habite à Gesnes-en-Argonne.  Ma mère est de Gesnes et mon père est de Romagne-sous-Montfaucon.

I was born there and I live in Gesnes-en-Argonne.  My mother is from Gesnes and my father is from Romagne-sous-Montfaucon.

 

4)  When did you really find yourself drawn to the Meuse-Argonne?

Depuis que je suis enfant, je ramassais déjà des vestiges de la Grande Guerre qu’on trouve encore partout.

Since I was a child, I was already picking up remnants of the Great War that we still find everywhere.

 

5)  What is your primary interest in the region?

Je suis Argonnais et très attaché à ma région.

I am from the Argonne and am very attached to my region.

 

6)  Approximately how many times and/or how often do you visit the Meuse-Argonne?

J’y habite.

I live there.

 

7)  What do you do when you visit?

Je parcours les bois, les champs et les cimetières.

I walk the woods, fields and cemeteries.

 

8)  What research or preservation projects are you working on currently?

10)  What is your favorite spot in the Meuse-Argonne, and why?

Gesnes-en-Argonne et Romagne-sous-Montfaucon car c’est là où se trouve toute ma famille et où je suis né. J’y ai vécu une belle enfance.

Gesnes-en-Argonne and Romagne-sous-Montfaucon because this is where my whole family is and where I was born. I had a good childhood there.

 

11) History aside, what is your favorite thing to do in the Meuse-Argonne?

Recherche historique sur les villages d’Argonne.  Archives.  Je conçois des armoiries pour les villages du département de la Meuse.  J’ai organisé de nombreuses expositions sur 14-18 en Meuse et sur l’époque de Napoléon car j’ai publié les mémoires de guerre d’un ancêtre qui a parcouru toute l’Europe dans le 84^e Régiment de Ligne de 1803 à 1813.

Historical research on the villages of Argonne.  Archives.  I design coats of arms for the villages of the Department of the Meuse.  I organized many exhibitions on 14-18 in the Meuse and Napoleon’s time because I published the memoirs of war of an ancestor who traveled all over Europe in the 84th Line Regiment from 1803 to 1813.

 

12)  Schedule permitting, would you consider being a tour guide for individuals or groups traveling to the sector?

Oui. J’ai déjà guidé de nombreux Américains et Allemands à la recherche des traces de leur grand-père ou grand-oncle.  J’ai déjà fourni de nombreux documents à des auteurs allemands et américains pour des livres. Je suis une personne ressource pour les documents en Meuse.

Yes.  I have already guided many Americans and Germans looking for traces of their grandfather or grand-uncle.  I have already provided many documents to German and American authors for books.  I am a resource person for documents in Meuse.
