The 111th (German) Infanterie-Regiment by Exermont

Readers are advised that Webmaster Randy Gaulke authored Chapter 14 of “A Companion to the Meuse-Argonne Campaign” (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Malden, MA, 2014) which discusses the role of the 111th (German) Infantry Regiment, 52nd (German) Infantry Division against the 35th and 1st Infantry Divisions, A.E.F. during the early days of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

In a nutshell, the regiment/division arrived in the Meuse-Argonne on 28 September, and on 29 September it attacked the green 35th Division, A.E.F., leading to that unit’s disintegration in the field. However, the German unit’s fortunes changed for the worse when the 1st Division replaced the 35th Division and attacked on 4 October 1918.
